Our family moved back to England from Virginia in 2002. My father is from Oklahoma and the Carlile family from there. I guess they were 'sooners' like many others and I believe they came from Missouri. Thanks for a great site.

I believe we are related through the Carlisle side of the family. I have been able to trace back to my great, great, great, great grandparents who were Francis Carlisle and Mary Elizabeth Grant Carlisle. I can share the info with you if you send me your email address. I was raised in Florida, but now live in Marietta where it looks like several of you are living. It truly is a small world!

My mother was a Carlyle and her family was from Missouri and Arkansas. I have traced my grandfathers, George Carlyle's family. His father was Robert H Carlisle (born 1832) and he married Mary Asher of Missouri, her family is of Virginia.  His father was Robert W Carlisle of Texas Mo where he was a farmer and appointed post master general of the Carlisle Post office (he was born 1795 in North Carolina) and married a Mary ? ( we heard she might be Cherokee) . They lived in Kentucky around 1830's , cause on the census two of their daughters are listed as being born there, a Mary and Martha. I am stuck at this spot and can't figure anymore. Do you have any ideas if your family as a connection? Thanks and I so enjoyed the research about the Carlisles of Scotland and Ireland. This was info I did not know.!

I enjoyed reading this very much.  I am myself a direct descendant of James and Francis Carlisle.  My grandmother, Robbie Vee Carlisle was the youngest child of Robert Alexander Carlisle. He was born in Merriweather County, Ga in 1865.  He was the son of  James M Carlisle~son of Francis.  My grandmother was the only child of Robert Alexander Carlisle (wife Venorah) who was born in Texas.  The other children were all born in Alabama.  I believe is mother also migrated to Texas with him.

Thank you so much for having done this amazing research! And for posting it where I could find it. I am 51 years old, and never knew anything about my name's history, and until last night, did not care. Along about sunset, I was roused from my r.v. by the sweet sound of bagpipes. One of the other campers was playing loud and proud. As I listened, tears filled my eyes. I felt something I can't explain. And so I had to know from whence I came. There are still some blanks to fill, but your research has painted a picture I can get my mind around. So I thank you!

Hi, In my research,it appears that James Carlile and Elizabeth Trebble Campbell are my 4th Great Grandparents (Maternal Line). Their daughter Elvira Catherine Carlisle married a Henry Bishop (3rd Great Grandparents), and their daughter Elizabeth Bishop married a William Clark Thompson (2nd Great Grandparents) and their daughter Mentory Thompson married John Thomas Warren (Great Grandparents) and their daughter Annie Mae Warren married Golden Allgood Palmer (Grandparents). My mother Eleanor Palmer is the daughter of Annie Mae and Golden A. Palmer. That's what I have been able to put together from my research and DNA testing. If this is not correct for the Carlile's please let me know.

My third great-grandfather James "Sammie" Grant was possibly the son of John Grant, making Sammie a brother of your Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant. Sammie was born in South Carolina and died in Broughton in Randolph County, Alabama.  He married Lucy ?Prince. Your amazing Sarrets of Georgia web page refers to John Grant's will, executed by his son-in-law Francis Carlile. Would it be possible for me to see a copy of that will? It would answer the question of whether or not my Sammie is the brother of your Betsy. Kindest regards,

I have commented on one of the Sarrett message boards some time ago asking for info. I suppose no one knew what I was asking about as I never received a response.  Quite alright, as I think we are only now maybe finding out who our brick walls belonged too, through DNA and hearing from new cousins. Our walls were Joseph Dillard born 1775 Wake NC and supposedly his wife Milly Vermillion ?, born 1787, who was also supposedly born in Wake, NC.  Now I think we are finding out that she may have already been a Dillard from one of the other branches, Thomas and Ruth Goad Dillard.  Joseph belongs we think, to Joseph and Mary Williams Dillard.  Still to be absolutely proven, but believed to be.  If you have anything about these two in any of your research, could you please send me what you have at the above email.  Will share what ever I have on ours, like pics and etc. Would love to have pics of yours, with pertinet info for each, as I like to see what they all looked like! and compare them, if they become available.  I really think it quite neat!!!!  Of course, they all are kin in some manner or form. Would love to hear from you and thanking you in advance for anything that you might share,

Thanks for adding to what I have already learned of our family history. My grandfather,Jesse Marion Carlile, changed the spelling of our last name, dropping the "s" during the early 1900's, after growing tired of explaining the silent letter. However, the remainder of his family kept that spelling. I do know that after arriving in South Carolina, my ancestors moved through Georgia, and on through the south until settling in Texas. My siblings and I have researched our family for decades, with information about this side of our family the most prominent. I continue to be interested in the history of the Carlisle/Carlile families, and appreciate all information available.

My Great Grandmother was Serena A. Carlisle.  Your history is wonderful to read and has given me a lot of information I didn't have but not much on Serena.  I know she died young, 34 or 35, in 1903.  She was married to James Eubank, my grandfather Hugh Edgar Eubank was very young when she died. From family I have heard that he lived with her sisters after her death but no one seems to have any details about where or when.  He went by the nickname, Dusty, and never lived with his father after Serena's death.  Does anyone in the Carlisle family know anything about this or where I should start looking?  Also, I would like to find more information on her death....cause, where, etc.  If anyone can help I would love it!!  Thank you ahead of time!!

I Loved looking at all your pictures. Agnes Carlisle Kennedy, d/o James Carlisle and Margaret Boles Carlisle and sister of Francis, was my maternal ggg-grandmother. My mom's brother, Bill Hall, lives in Cartersville and he is familiar with your homeplace. In fact, he said they are kin to the Carlisles on the Hall side too. I haven't found that connection yet. Lots of Dillards all over the US and other places.  Some of us have a brick wall in our particular lineage that we can't seem to hurdle.  Try to check each and every one that I run across.  It seems that all are kin in some fashion because many of the earlier ones had many half siblings in the same families and they spread everywhere.  I think some have flown under the radar because you can't seem to find who they belonged to. Joseph Dillard b. 1775, NC, m. Milly (Vermillion- given or surname ?) b. 1787, in NC. They married in IL in 1814 then moved into MO and AR.

Enjoyed reading your work. I am researching the Dillard, Duckett, Robinson, Raughton, and Barker families, which have ties to your Dillards. James and Mary Ramage Dillard were my 4th great grand parents. My great grand mother, Sarah C. Baker, father was James Duncan Baker b. 23 Sep 1828 in NC. He married Priscula Jane Dillard, who was Samuel Dillard's daughter. Samuel was James and Mary Ramage's son. I have a family tree on Ancestery.com. The Robinson Family Tree. I hope you will allow me to use some of your Dillard information and pictures, in my tree. I already have a lot of it that I gathered from other sources on Ancestry.com and visiting cemeteries and court houses. I just went to the Old Duncan Creek cemetery last week. I took about 150 photos, but the gravestones are so old you can hardly read them. Luckly, a lot of them are posted on find a grave. My father, Jessie Robinson was born in Whitmire, Newberry County, SC in 1905. They lived there from 1903- 1917. Two of the Duckett women Ada and Eva(who are related to the Dillards) lived in the same house with my grand father and father in 1910. Also, my grand mother was a Willard, whoes family were life long residents of Union and Newberry County. Please advise if I can use your information posted on this site. Thanks

Hello, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your website. Just found it tonight and haven't read everything,as yet. My ggggrandfather, James DILLARD, was in the 1850 census for Pike County, Arkansas and I'm not sure of his ancestors but am certain they must connect with yours.  James was born in North Carolina abt. 1810, according to the census. His children were Ann b. abt 1833 TN, Silvia S. b. abt.1838 MS, James W. b. abt. 1841 MS, Major T. b. abt. 1843 AR, Virginis F. b. abt. 1846 AR, and George S. b. abt 1849 AR. I never found him or his wife Sarah C. HOLT DILLARD in the 1860 but some of the children were in different households.  Ann was my gggrandmother and was married to Charles Cook by then. Anyway, there was a Sims P. DILLARD, Reuben R. DILLARD, John B. DILLARD, and a Barzealia DILLARD listed in Howard County Land Patents for Arkansas for the years, 1827-1859. Hope these names match with someone. Thank You.

This is the site that I have been looking for! I have recently undertaken a genealogy project for the Carlisle/Carlile family, and have yet to find a better lead than what I have. The earliest record that I have is of a David and Leatis Carlile of Lunenberg, Massachusetts in 1730 for the birth of their daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth was one of four of David and Leatis' children to die from a measles epidemic. The relevance of the theory that these Carlile's came from Ireland seems excellent, but the date that I have is earlier than what is mentioned on your site. If you have any connections to these people, please contact me.
Thank you very much, the site is great.

I am a descendant of William Dillard (1753-1781, Battle of Eutwaw Springs, SC)(son of John and Sophia Dillard) and Mary Norman through their son James.  After James moved in the early 1800s to the area that is now around Fort Knox, KY, his descendants intermarried with the Catholic families of the vicinity.  Some of the allied families include Lancaster, Rhodes, Peak, Mattingly and Buckman.  Many of these Catholic families had migrated from St. Mary's Co., MD in the 1790s to KY.  Today, many of their descendants still live in the Ft. Knox/Louisville, KY region. Would anyone happen to know what unit William Dillard was with at Eutaw Springs and whether he was present at any other battles in Greene's southern campaign (Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, Hobrick Hill, Fort Ninety-Six, etc.)?  I have always been interested in Greene's southern campaign, and I was rather surprised to find out that I had an ancestor who was a part of it. Thanks.

Thank you for compiling these great pictures.  I still love Kirkwood and have so many pictures in my head, but none like these of the actual location.  Marlene's kindergarten picture has a picture on the middle of the front row of Betty Smoot (Barron).  I am still in touch with her.  She married a Presbyterian Minister (deceased) and she moved back to Atlanta.  I was in kindergarten in 1940, but I graduated from Murphy High in l951 With Marlene.

What a delight it is to find your site, quite by accident. My mother's maiden name is Pittard. She grew up in Oxford, NC and is (I believe) a descendant of Samuel Pittard. Our line goes through John Edward Pittard, Granvill Co. NC. My "retirement project" will be to dig deeply into family history and your site provided just the inspiration I need. Thanks for all your work and your willingness to share! I'll keep checking back.

Loved your webpage. I am a Dillard, my people are from Enoree and are from what little I did know direct descendants of Capt. John Dillard, from around Laurens. After reading your very comprehensive and thorough web site, perhaps it was James (Laurens James). Perhaps because we never found the burial sites authenticity was hard to define. I had a lot of great uncles and 2 aunts and my great Dillard grandparents owned 400 acres there for many years. Huge farming land and orchards and pecan groves. From what I have heard and seen it was a huge undertaking to have been a youth and to have lived there during it's hey dey. I lost my last great uncle last year. The sons and daughters of all of my great aunts and uncles had moved to Charlotte and Florida, etc. so when we did get together ever so often at the "farm", it was a huge undertaking to coordinate who belonged to who, ha. Regardless, thanks for all the hard work you put into this site. You have included so much vast information. I continued to peruse your albums section and couldn't help but notice your Pratt family in the 1947, Ga. There were no other pictures of them they were such a beautiful group also, just kind of wondered what happened to that part of your family, as well.

Not related, but just moved to Anderson, from Greenville. Hubby and I took a ride today, and ended up looking around Lowndesville, just by accident. Learned much about the history of Lowndesville from a local historian who saw me taking pictures of a couple of old buildings still standing. I was intrigued by the history that this guy knew, and was still sharp as a tack at 81 years young. A very nice conversation ensued, and I felt like I had been there before, in another time. I have enjoyed reading about your family history. Mostly because it is so similar to my husband's Whigham family out of Louisville, GA. Some Whighams are married to Carswells. I kept looking to see if that name popped up in your writings becasue of the similarity. Eighty One Whighams just left Louisville, GA from a National Whigham Reunion. We went to Carswell/Whigham cemetaries in the woods out of Wrens and on US 1. If you have anything on the Whighams of Lousiville that would be wonderful. They were from Scotland too and took land in Queensboro where your ancestor turned down land and moved on to S.C. I feel they knew each other. It is thought they came on the Hopewell Ship. Do you know where I can confim that? Again, I so enjoyed reading of history. We passed through Bartow, GA today. Lovely town. I have Maxwell, Taylor, Sasser, Williams, Jones, Hawthorne, lines. Wonderful - there is so much mis-information out there and finding the truch about my ancestor, Susannah Surrett hasn't been easy. Dates were wrong, name spelling was in question, etc. Luckily, my family had the spelling correct for the period and dates close enough, finding your site was the final link. Kudos. Your research into the Sarrett family was a godsend for me. My mother, Naomi Faris Lindsey was born in Camden, Tn., daughter of James Finley Lindsey and Elsie Herndon Lindsey. I was also born in Camden. My line comes through John Sarrett, who married Mary McMurry. I think this came through my grandmother Elsie, whose mother, was a Browning, daughter or granddaughter of Jacob Browning. Again, thanks for the information, since I have found so much conflict from where my family originated. Any thing else you might discover, I would certainly appreciate the information. Linda Chesnutt

Hi My Aunty has finished the family history many years ago and over many centuries and has traced as far back, and before Robert the Bruce. I am a decendant of Robert the Bruce. Throughout our history (family) we have had Robert and Bruce + Corrie in the Family name. My Grand Fathers name was Bruce Corrie Young, his grandfather was Robert Bruce Young, His son was named Robert Corrie Young and My aunty was named Corrie Young and on it goes back into many centuries of history until it was traced back by my aunty Corrie Young (maiden name) to Robert the Bruce. I am not into history but i find it amazing to think that we are directly decended from King of Scotland Robert The Bruce. If anyone else has info i would like to hear from them. Kind regards, Sonya

I do alot of genealogy on lines of my husband which are Malone and Sansom. I don't know what link blinked me to your site, but it is interesting to note that James D(avis) Pittard married a d/o Thomas Sansom of Clarke Co., Ga. and his wife, America Nunnally Sansom. He owned a tannery with one of his brothers-in-law, James Sansom, which was inherited from his father-in-law Thomas Sansom. He and James owned lands together or near each other from my memory. Do you have any clue as to where Rebecca Pittard Malone fits into this? I show her as having been married to John Malone Jr. b. about 1792 NC d. 1856 Monroe Co., Ms. married 11-5-1816 to Rebecca Pittard who the researcher of this line noted incorrectly (will you site) she was a d/o John Pittard of Granville Co., NC. This couple was said to be parents of Frances Malone md. 1 Jesse Parchman and 2 Wilson O Coats; Chelsy Malone md. Susan C. McKinney (have a e-mail addres to kin of this couple) Wiliam t. Malone; Lucinda Malone, James D. Malone, Penelope Malone, Samuel b. Malone; Robert B. Malone and Elizabeth Ann Malone. This couple went to Tx. Molly McLaughlin

My Gowdy/Anderson line from Guilford Co., NC and Sumner Co., TN were early settlers - probably from PA. They tended to use Carlile as a middle name although we have no idea why. Aminta C. Gowdy was my ancestor and I am quite certain that C stood for Carlile, too. Perhaps your Carlile ancestor WAS a minister....or a relative. Aminta married James S. Craig, the son of Samuel Craig of Abbeville. His father was James Craig who died 1 Feb 1781 in the Rev. War and was an early Long Cane settler (1770). Samuel's wife was Jane Cochran of Cedar Springs, Abbeville congregation - supposedly from County Monaghan like the Carliles.

Your excellent family history misses the point that before its seizure in 1098 by the King of England, the lordship of Carlisle and the Forest of Cumberland (Inglewood) were the appenage of the heir apparent to the throne of Scotland. Hildret or Hildred or Hildreth de Carleil or Carleolo who lived at Kirkbampton (just outside Carlisle) was a member of the royal family of the ancient Britons. I think he must have been a son of Maldred fitz Maldred. Can anyone enlighten me? If anyone would like more information on Hildred's lands and descendants, I will be pleased to share what I have.

I was looking at the message posted regarding Jeremiah and Christy Leak by Cindy Gullion on the website. I am originally from Arab and grew up there and know a little information about the people she is speaking of. Another son of theirs, Martin Luther Leak, was my Great Grandfather. This would have made Cindy's G-Grandfather and mine brothers!! My G-grandfather Martin married Laura Lindley Leak who we have been told was half Native American Indian. They had many children (I am trying to count in my head) My grandfather was one of the younger children. His name was George Ulysses Leak born in 1898. He married my grandmother Roxie Bertha Coker she was born in 1900. My great grandmother, Laura, died as a result of the influenza sweep that killed so many back in those times, my grandfather was only 8 or 9 when she died and I think she was in her 50's. When Cindy mentioned the burial site of Jeremiah (downtown Arab), I knew exactly where she was talking about. I actually have a pretty good old photo of Jeremiah ( it was when he was quite old). It was nice to read information from someone I am related to and in the same town where I grew up. Thanks for the info on this site.

Kay, I forgave Doug about the IRS Building and even wrote a letter about it which was published in the AJC. As a matter of fact, the building was so poorly built, it needed to be replaced. I think it was held together by wires we saw along the wall which we never understood why they were there. Connie didn't explain that Bob & Doug's mom use to drop me off there for work. This is a very interesting light on the Carlile family, from which I am descended. Our branch had a geneology done by British Museum in around 1900 showing a descent from Kings of England, and coat of arms, etc. This side stayed in Scotland, but some emigrated to various other countries.

It was great to find the article "Dillard: One American Family." The 6th generation info picks up my line with Major Lemuel Dillard and his 4th wife Martha E Collins. I'm working very hard to find what became of her after his death in 1883. She was only 28 - he was 82! And, they had a son born in 1878-9, John Thomas Dillard - my great grandfather. If anyone has knowledge of Martha E Collins Dillard, please contact me. She was born about 1855. They lived in what was Cass County, GA, now Bartow. Great website.

I use to be in contact with Anne Bowden, a distant-distant cousin, who put together The Pittard Family History. This information was once online, before she published, I guess. I am a direct decendant of Samuel Pittard (1710-1785). My father is Thomas S. Pittard my grandparents are James D. & Martha Pittard who live in Cartersville. I'm just trying to find some of the information again. Thanks!

I have been working on the Pittard family for several years and have documents that show the Caswell, Person, Granville, Warren and Halifax Counties of North Carolina are the same families. I am trying to locate the parents of Mary Ann Pittard in Warren Co., NC in 1840 census and Alex, Anderson and Washington Pittard in the house of Briton Harris in Warren Co., NC in the 1850 census. These same 3 boys are in the same house in the 1860 census of Warren Co., NC but the names are listed with initials. I do not understand the change of Washington to I (or J). K. P. I think these children may be related to the wife of Britton Harris (Mary W. Anderson who 1st married a Davis before she married Britton Harris. There is also a Mary Ann Pittard in the 1840 census with a 0-5 year old son, 1850 this son is listed on the census index as Mile G. Pittard, however it is Wil. G. Pittard in the house of Dudley Minga. He is listed correct in the 1860 census in the house of L. Minga. He services in the War Between The States and dies during the war. Can anyone help me with the parents of Mary Ann Pittard, and the 3 boys, Alex, Anderson (he died during the war) and Washington.

I thought the part about different spellings interesting. It occured in our family with my granfather and two great uncles. The great uncles spell their name Carlisle. It came about when a college teacher told my great-aunt (by marriage) that her last name was spelled wrong (without the "s"). The brothers asked their father why the name was spelled without the "s", and he said a census taker had left it out a long time ago, and since he didn't see a need for it, he left it out. If they wanted it back in, put it back in. Two of the brothers put the "s" back in, my grandfather said he'd leave his the way his father spelled it. So the same family has two spellings. My grandfather was Jesse Marion, md. Lillian Perritt, his father: John Thomas, md. Elizabeth M. Arthus, his father: John William md. Mary Ann "Polly", his father: James, md. Elizabeth. The family was from Alabama, John Wm., John T., and Jesse are buried in Price Chapel cemetary, Anderson County Texas, along with my father Jesse Marvin Carlile Sr. any info on James and Elizabeth would be appreciated.

I need to make a correction in the info I emailed you RE Anna Herod's letter to Elizabeth. I stated that Thomas E. Herod was Anna's son when in fact Thomas is her grandson. Sorry about that. Margie

My great grandfather was Bertram Sarrett who was son of George Thomas. My grandparents (Bertram's daughter and son-n-law lived in Benton Co. Tn. I'm so thrilled to know there are living relatives out there.

I love this site! The photos and information are outstanding and have made my family search much easier. I'm descended from Samuel Joseph Young Carlisle and Elizabeth Leake (my great-great grandparents). Would love to hear from any cousins.

I love your site. I was hoping to connect, but so far none of the names are familiar. I am a descendant of two Carlisle lines (not related as far as I know at this time). My grandfather, John Madison Carlisle, married my grandmother, Harriet R. Carlisle. Both from Alabama. They descended from Carlisles in GA, NC & SC. Dale Carlisle.

I'm so excited to find this site and what Kay has done with it. She's wonderful. So thrilled to find family, I'm speechless. Would love to hear from any of you. My dad was Frank Fletcher Wallace, youngest child of Roland Melvin Wallace and Daisy Leake Carlisle (daughter of SJY "Joe" and Elizabeth Leake Carlisle). Regards, Rayann Walker

I come down thru James' other son, Capt. Francis, whose given name stayed with us thru my GF who hated it, always went by Frank. There are some great photos of early homes in H. A. Carlisle's book 'History of Loudensville, SC'. I have some data on collaterals on my side to share. Joe Sissom

Great Site, Kay! I just viewed your site and discovered the names of 8 more of my direct ancestors! That puts me over 200. Thanks for your help. Anyone who wants to see how I fit into this Carli(s)le family can peruse my website. It is not as cool as Kay's though :) I hope to add some pics to my site as well. -gb-

How exciting to read part of my Carlile history!! I am a descendant of James Carlisle b1791 who married Elizabeth Trebble Campbell c1821. James is a brother of Francis and Samuel Young Carlile. The pictures and format are amazing.

Kay, a really neat webpage. I enjoyed reading more about Elizabeth Leak Carlisle. She was sister to my Serena/Cerene Leak Wright. Also Rev. Jimmy Gaines of NY (another of her descendants) shared that photo of Elizabeth and her family with me.

I love your web pages. They are a wonderful gift to the family. I really wish Daddy had not changed the spelling of our last name; it makes me feel disconnected. It is strange how many generations only had 2 boys, including my brother.

Thanks for writing me, I'm always thrilled to find some more Pittard kin. It is like a big jigsaw puzzle, with pieces scattered all over. Someday I hope to bring them all together, and I know the Internet is the way to do it. Love, Cousin Anne

Hey Kay. Good Job!!! Mom wants to know how you got all those pictures and if you have copies. George gave her a copy of these pages and I have the internet at home. She had to show me the pages herself. Are you going to put a picture of all the living Sarretts on this?
