Vicksburg December 1862 - July 1863 As Sherman began to amass troops at the mouth of the Yazoo River, Stevenson's Division, including Barton's Brigade, was rushed by train to defend Vicksburg and hold the Mississippi River.

Champion Hill May 16 While graciously hosting GBSHHA in 2004 for a private tour of the battlefield that has been in his family for five generations, Sid Champion V posed with the marker designating Champion Hill Battlefield as a National Historic Landmark.

Seige of Vicksburg / South Fort May - July After three days of marching and fighting, the soldiers returned to Vicksburg exhausted from the battle of Champion Hill. Stevenson's Division was sent to the southern most portion of the trench line. Barton's Brigade occupied the river front.
