She is buried with her mother and father in Cassville Cemetery in Cassville, GA. It's likely this photo and the one just above it were made during the same visit to Chattanooga since both are marked A.W. Judd. From the collection of Martha Crenshaw "Aunt Mattie" Sarrett.

Circa 1920 Granny Sarrett

Our grandmother, Martha Matilda Morris Sarrett Underwood Boyd Goff with her son, David Monroe Underwood (and an unidentified woman, see inset). She married David's father after being widowed with a very young son, our grandfather George Montgomery Sarrett. After Barrington Underwood died during the Civil War, she married a Mr. Boyd, then Benjamin Franklin Goff.

In later years, she was known as Granny Goff and lived in Alabama City, AL, where this photo is believed to have been made on the steps of her home at 24 Kyle Ave.

The old home was located in the block between what is now the old General Forrest Junior High and Emma Sansom High School, which is now Meighan Blvd. and U.S. Hwy 278 and 431. Now an historical area, the Kyle Ave. home was about 100 yards from where Emma Sansom grew up. As a little girl, Emma showed General Nathan Bedford Forrest where to cross Black Creek to stop Sherman from burning everything between there and Georgia.

Granny Goff was born in Hamilton County Tennessee on Feb 6, 1839 and during her lifetime went by both Martha and Matilda. She died in Alabama City, AL on Sept 16, 1926 at age 87 and is buried in White Hall Cemetery, Dekalb County, AL.

1934 Sunny Cicero - Ed, Lucile, Carl, Bob & George Sarrett.

"We lived on N La Cross Avenue in a duplex, the last place we lived before moving to Atlanta from Chicago. Mama, Marlene, Dianne and I went to Chicago in 1948. Mama was curious to see how things had changed. We went to La Cross and nothing looked the same as she remembered, the reason, our two story duplex along with every other one on the street had been jacked up and a third floor added where the basement area had been.

From the collection of Martha Crenshaw "Aunt Mattie" Sarrett

I don't know when the change was made since we had been gone 14 years. In Marlene's history of the family on page A-11 is a map of the area, and on the next few pages is the other places we lived in Chicago. When I was stationed at Chunute Field my buddy and I went to Chicago three times in 1945, one time we went to Cicero because we didn't have much money, the locals were real nice to service people, bought our meals and entertainment. Cicero was where the mob lived and did business in the 20s and 30s, Daddy worked in a garage for a time, that he said later, he worked on luxury cars that belonged to the Capone gang members. So the picture was made during the mob days in Cicero, that what's wrong with all of us." George W. Sarrett

Cousins Joel and Kay Sarrett during a rehearsal for a hootnanny. The momentous one-show performance featured guitar playing, folk singing, and matching costumes crafted by our grandmother, Nana (Lucile Carlisle Sarrett). Invited guests, including many family members, crowded into George and Caryl's basement, transformed for the occasion into a coffee house setting of flickering candles atop red and white checked tablecloths. The event was complete with stage lighting, microphones, and the technical expertise to make it all work, compliments of Michael Ross.

1994 Doug's 15 Minutes of Fame

When Hyatt Regency needed to demolish the old IRS building in downtown Atlanta to make way for hotel improvements, company officials seized the opportunity for publicity -- the weariest taxpayer they could find would get to do the honors. Guess who got to push the button? For a couple of days, Doug Sarrett was the most famous man in America. One of the many, many media interviews was this article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

In addition to blasting the Internal Revenue Service to bits on Dec 18, 1994, Doug and Ruth enjoyed a free night - April 15 - at the Hyatt, and Doug received a nice plaque. Besides Doug's link to the building, there's another family connection; Billy and Marlene Sarrett O'Brien, Doug's uncle and aunt, met there when both worked for the IRS.

Standby . . . the movie takes about a minute to load.
By the way, it's pronounced sa-RET, y'all. One reporter got it right.
